*Assembly Required Kick Off Party

8 PM – 10 PM

Catawba Brewing Company, South Slope Asheville

32 Banks Ave, Asheville, NC 28801

>No Cover<

Begin the weekend with the official *Assembly Required kick off party! Show your love for all things designer toy, as we welcome to town our 31 participating artists. This will be your first opportunity to talk with the artists face to face, as well as the organizers of the Asheville Designer Toy Expo, in a more casual environment… before we all Get Our Toy On!

Jam to the sounds of Aunt Vicki, an Asheville-based indie rock band formed by married songwriter duo Lee Dyer and Erin Campbell and joined by Michael O’Shea on drums. Wash it down with Catawba Brewing’s release tonight of their Maple Breakfast Stout. “Brewed with caramel & chocolate malts and roasted barley, this beer begins as a smooth, full-bodied American Stout. From there, it is blended in cold-brewed Arabica coffee until it had just the right balance of chocolate, dark roast, toasted nuts, and a subtle hint of blueberry. Then it is topped with a light drizzle of real maple syrup, finishing Catawba’s new favorite breakfast beer on a sweet (but not too sweet!), creamy, frothy note.”

Stout ain’t your thing? You may be sus, but no big. Then pick yourself up the preferred local beer of organizer Matthew J. Casale: White Zombie. “Brewed according to the Belgian Witbier tradition using unmalted wheat to create a light body and white sheen. Additions of coriander and orange peel give it a fruity and spicy character while the hops are subtle and only lightly detected.”

“I’m very excited that we’re hosting our official kick off party at Catawba, as at our previous events I’ve always had to settle for something else.” ~ MJC .

*Assembly Required: DAY ONE

11 AM – 5 PM

The Funkatorium

Wicked Weed Brewing

147 Coxe Ave, Asheville, NC 28801

Ladies and gentlemen… boys and girls

… the chocolate factory…

As the premiere destination for independent designer, bootleg and art toy artists and collectors, *Assembly Required honors this melting pot of artistic expression as a true to form turn of the century, pop surrealistic art movement (learn more here).

Nestled within a valley of subculture, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain range, *Assembly Required brings artists from across the nation to celebrate this avant-garde culture. Attendees will see works of art that – quite honestly – may never be seen again. As many of the pieces produced by these artists are made in extremely limited runs.

Funkatorium Mask Policy:

“Per Buncombe County and City of Asheville requirements, all employees and guests must wear a face covering when indoors except when actively eating or drinking.”

Giving us the soundtrack we all deserve, official *Assembly Required DJ, Cousin TL, returns to our 2022 expo to funk your ears up! Growing up in Detroit, MI, Cousin TL consumed Rock, Ska, House and Motown. Living in New York City and visiting Philadelphia, PA, he witnessed the evolution of Neo-Soul. Along with his successful syndicated podcast, “Supa Dupa”, on Pacifica Radio, Cousin TL was responsible for introducing Neo-Soul to the mountains of Asheville NC, hosting “Asheville Nu Radio” on WPVM. Now for 13 years, Cousin TL has continuously produced damn-good radio, garnishing his shows with humor, giving listeners something new, while giving them something familiar, inviting, and an all-out great time.”

In celebrating the designer toy subculture, *Assembly Required recognizes the pop-culture that inspired and influenced children decades ago – children who grew up to be the artists on the forefront of this art movement. Enhancing the ambiance of the artist alley, the 8-Bit sounds of the *Assembly Arcade Lounge will once again echo the golden age of arcade video games, thanks to *Assembly Required sponsor,  Appalachian Pinball Museum. So take your cold beverage over to some old school video games, listen to Cousin TL spin some tunes, and admire your new one of a kind art toys!

*Assembly Required: DAY TWO

11 AM – 4PM

The Funkatorium

Wicked Weed Brewing

147 Coxe Ave, Asheville, NC 28801

Did you spend too much time worrying about a good excuse as to why you didn’t want to come out for day one?

Maybe you promised to help Ashley clean the toilet, because she doesn’t like doing it alone, because she gets nervous that she will fall in?

Maybe you were here yesterday, and you passed on one thing that haunted you all night! So much so that you have to come back for a second day!?! Yep… been there. Thankfully if you purchased a ticket on day one, entry to day two is free with your ticket stub from Saturday!

If for some strange reason you didn’t purchase a ticket for day one (sus?), come for day two anyway to simply support an independent event that supports awesome independent artists! Asheville hasn’t seen anything like this, and we want to keep coming back.

Don’t wait! We’ll only be here one more day, before you have to wait another whole year to get your toy on!

If you are unable to make it to our In-Person event, please consider a donation. We cannot afford to do this without your support. Literally.
